A dishwasher uses changing amounts of power for pumping, controls, water heating, and sometimes heated drying. It should be estimated by complete cycles rather than by assuming one constant load. WattFigure’s editable preset uses 1,200 watts, 1.5 hours per use day, 15 use days per month, and a 60% duty cycle. Those values demonstrate the method; an exact model’s annual kWh or measured cycle is more reliable.
The worksheet divides watts by 1,000 and multiplies by cycle hours, quantity, and duty-cycle fraction. The preset produces 1.2 × 1.5 × 0.60, or 1.08 kWh per use day. If one day represents one cycle, the monthly day count can represent loads. Some modern cycles last much longer while using intermittent power, so duration alone does not show energy. A longer low-power cycle may use less kWh than a shorter intensive cycle.
Understand direct and water-heating loads
Dishwashers may heat incoming water to meet cycle targets, but the home’s water heater also supplies energy before water reaches the machine. Product test data incorporates defined conditions for comparison. A household calculation that separately estimates water-heater energy must avoid counting the same heat twice. If a correctly rated plug-in meter can safely be used with the installation and manufacturer instructions, measure several complete cycles. Nameplate watts can describe a maximum heating state rather than average cycle power. The duty-cycle setting is a visible approximation for pumps and heaters switching on and off. A full-cycle kWh reading or annual kWh figure integrates those stages more accurately.
Cycle, loading, and drying choices matter
Normal, eco, heavy, quick, sanitize, and heated-dry options can use different energy and water. Select the cycle appropriate for the load and manufacturer guidance. Heated drying can add electricity; an air-dry option may reduce that load when suitable. A sanitize option may intentionally use more heat for a specific function, so cost should not be evaluated without its purpose.
Loading affects how many cycles a household needs. Correctly loading a full machine can spread each cycle’s energy across more items, but overcrowding or blocking spray paths can reduce cleaning and require rewashing. Scraping practices, filter maintenance, detergent, water hardness, and incoming water temperature also affect results. Follow the manual rather than treating an energy estimate as operating guidance.
Standby power can be measured separately if it is material. Create a low-watt, 24-hour row so active-cycle assumptions remain clear. Avoid extrapolating a one-minute control-panel reading across every hour without checking actual sleep behavior.
Use an appropriate electricity price
The calculator’s state reference is an EIA residential average, not a specific household tariff. It is derived from reported revenue and sales. Utility bills may include fixed charges, taxes, riders, tiers, credits, and time-of-use periods. Fixed charges usually remain even if one dishwasher cycle is avoided.
Dishwashers are often flexible loads. On a time-of-use plan, moving a cycle away from an expensive period may change cost without changing kWh. Model price periods separately. Check local guidance and equipment features before using delayed start, particularly where noise, leak monitoring, or household supervision is a concern.
For product comparisons, use the same annual cycles, incoming-water assumptions, cycle purpose, and rate. Include water use and water-heating fuel where relevant. Purchase price, installation, capacity, cleaning performance, repairability, and expected service matter beyond electric cost. A calculated difference is not a guaranteed payback.
Better-estimate checklist
- Use complete-cycle or annual kWh instead of peak watts where possible.
- Define the cycle and monthly load count.
- Avoid double-counting household and internal water heating.
- Record heated-dry, sanitize, and other energy-changing options.
- Apply the same assumptions to models being compared.
- Keep fixed bill charges separate from variable energy use.
